Route 72 between Jamestown and Cedarville has several sharp curves marked by chevron road signs, and deep ditches on both sides of it. “Life’s Road” is like that, lots of sharp curves and deep ditches. The two ditches along “life’s road” are “bitterness and envy” and we must heed the road signs (God’s Word) and negotiate the curves (trials and temptations) to avoid sliding into attitudes of bitterness or envy. In Psalm 73, Asaph, the writer of the psalm, fell into the ditches of bitterness and envy. He acknowledged that God is good to others, including the unrighteous, but not to him (1-15). It wasn’t until he stopped at a “rest area” (the sanctuary of the Lord) that he got his bearings, got back on the road, and realized how good God is to him, too. Psalm 73 is the next song on The Pilgrim’s Playlist that we’ll be listening to this Sunday morning. Pastor Dave will bring a message entitled God Is Good, But… that takes a hard look at an envious, bitter heart, and how that bitter heart can become better. Read this psalm of Asaph and come prepared to answer the question, “How’s your heart?”
